With spring in full swing and beautiful weather finally here, the children are enjoying the outdoors. As we look ahead to April, our students will dive into learning about Planet Earth and its various layers. They will continue their geographical exploration of Australia and Oceania, study the plant life cycle, and discover more about the incredible animals of Oceania, including koalas and kangaroos. Volcanic eruptions will also be part of our exciting curriculum!
We’re looking forward to more adventures and discoveries in the coming weeks!
March was a month full of excitement, creativity, and hands-on learning. With longer days and warmer weather, the classroom was filled with energy as we embraced the season. We kicked off the month by celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday, and we were so thankful to the parents who sent in Dr. Seuss books for everyone to enjoy. Our book of the month focused on Dr. Seuss, allowing us to dive into his beloved stories. The children have made wonderful progress with their reading, blending alphabet sounds to read a variety of books and getting quite skilled at identifying beginning sounds. Their growth in literacy has been inspiring!
In addition to reading, our students created beautiful artwork in enrichment activities inspired by Dr. Seuss, and St. Patrick’s Day. From vibrant crafts to fun holiday-themed projects, the children’s creativity truly shone. Geography lessons took us on an adventure to Africa, where we explored the continent’s fascinating landmarks and rich culture. The class worked together to create a stunning pyramid collage, which now proudly hangs on our classroom wall. They also learned about diverse dinosaur tribes and the unique animals that call Africa home. It was a month of both learning and celebration, with the students getting into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit through arts, crafts, and fun treats. They enjoyed making Dr. Seuss-inspired dishes like green eggs and ham, rainbow toast, and a special shamrock shake.
Our budding gardeners got to work planting strawberries, celery, zucchini, cucumbers, and bell peppers in the outdoor garden. Inside, they observed the growth of plants by planting seeds in Ziploc bags. It has been wonderful to see how quickly the plants are starting to grow. Be sure to ask your child about their gardening experiences!
As the month came to a close, our students gained a deeper understanding of Africa, from its famous landmarks to the animals that inhabit the continent. The excitement continues into April, where the students are eager to learn about islands, volcanoes, and other geographical features. We will focus on Australia, its unique traditions, and the incredible animals, like kangaroos and turtles, that call it home. Our young explorers will also learn about geology, gaining insight into the Earth’s natural wonders.
We began February by celebrating Black History Month and the Chinese New Year, welcoming the Year of the Snake! Learning about various Black history influences was a blast. Throughout the month, our class explored the vibrant cultures of different countries in Asia. The children were excited to learn about China, India, Japan, and Vietnam, discovering the food, traditions, and fascinating objects that make each country unique. A huge thank you to all the parents who shared fantastic items to showcase in the classroom—these cultural treasures truly brought our learning to life!
In our zoology lessons, the children became acquainted with some incredible Asian animals, such as the adorable panda bear, majestic Asian elephants, and hardworking silkworms. They were captivated by these animals and eager to learn more about their habitats and behaviors.
The children created observational drawings of roots and studied the water cycle, helping them better understand the natural world. To tie in with our book of the month, Little Blue and Little Yellow, we conducted watercolor experiments with coffee filters. The children loved watching the colors mix and blend, creating new and exciting shades! In music class, we introduced the children to Johannes Brahms and explored the beautiful sounds of his compositions. It was amazing to witness how the children connected with the music and began to appreciate its rhythms and melodies. Valentine’s Day brought even more creativity into our classroom. The children worked on art projects celebrating friendship and kindness, producing beautiful crafts that expressed how much they value their friends.
Throughout January, our class delved into the wonders of Winter, Snow and Ice. The children participated in activities that explored Antarctica and its unique wildlife, which perfectly complemented our book of the month, The Mittens. We also discussed the importance of courage in the classroom, with students sharing examples of how they could practice bravery, like trying new things and staying open to new experiences at school. Additionally, we took time to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and the significant impact of his contributions.
As part of our winter animal studies, we examined concepts such as hibernation, migration, and animal adaptation. We are grateful for your support in their research projects, which really enriched their learning experience. The science experiment with icebergs was a hit, and the enrichment activity, where we made snow with shaving foam and cornstarch, became a student favorite. We also created several art projects inspired by our book of the month.
December was a month filled with joyful anticipation as we looked forward to celebrating the holidays. During this busy time, we shared our holiday traditions and appreciated our unique differences. Our students learned about Europe's rich culture and famous landmarks, which expanded their understanding of the world. We are grateful to the parents who took the time to share their traditions with their children, helping to create a community of inclusiveness. Our Christmas performance was the highlight, showcasing the hard work of our dedicated students, who also crafted heartfelt gifts for their families.
In our zoology lessons, we explored the fascinating anatomy of a reindeer, while in botany, we focused on the beauty of conifer trees and pinecones. Our worksheet activity helped us appreciate the different parts of a reindeer as we explored the theme of gratitude through our book of the month, The Giving Tree.
In November, our classroom engaged in an enriching month with various educational themes. The students concentrated on the concept of kindness, exploring how small acts can significantly impact our community. In geography, they studied the diverse culture of the United States, focusing on its people, landmarks, traditions, and flags. To complement our book of the month, Fill A Bucket, we incorporated uplifting bucket-filling action writing exercises and accompanying drawings to reinforce the book's message.
In our zoology lessons, we explored the anatomy of turkeys, emphasizing the distinction between different parts of the bird. As Thanksgiving approached, we discussed the concept of gratitude and the importance of being thankful. The students participated in a creative activity where they made decorative turkeys to illustrate what they felt grateful for. Additionally, they crafted personal placemats with a Thanksgiving theme, enhancing their understanding of the holiday's significance while fostering creativity.
In October, we celebrated both Halloween and the arrival of fall. At the start of the month, we learned about our Solar System and gained insights into the layers of the earth. We also created beautiful artwork to complement our book of the month, Going on a Leaf Hunt. In the kindergarten program, children mastered vowels, and in math, they learned about even and odd numbers.
Our class delved into the wonders of North America and its fascinating wildlife. We embraced learning about the flags of North American countries, honing our skills in numbers and alphabets, and expressing ourselves through the art of writing. As part of our lesson plan, we explored the life cycle of a pumpkin and unleashed our creativity through pumpkin artwork. Our enrichment activities revolved around engaging Halloween arts and crafts. During circle time, the children have been captivated by the world of letter sounds and nocturnal animals. Furthermore, we have embarked on a journey of discovery through various Montessori works on our math and language shelves, igniting a spark of curiosity and enthusiasm among the students.
The first month of school has flown by! We've had the opportunity to make new friends and reunite with old ones. Our journey began with getting to know ourselves and our families. Sharing our hobbies and interests made for lively discussions. We also had a blast discovering the different types of apples and creating some beautiful artwork. We've been learning about land, water, and the seven continents in the past few weeks. During circle time, we reviewed classroom rules, and the children have been keen on keeping the classroom tidy. We're working on penmanship, writing their names, and improving our letter and number recognition. It's been a great start to the academic year!
In September, our students had a fun learning experience in zoology, where they learned about living and nonliving things. We also did some math activities and made a "Kissing Hand" craft to accompany our book of the month, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. The students also learned about how leaves change color in the Fall. For our Enrichment program, students made self-portraits with pretzels, and the children also enjoyed coloring their own rocks for our rock garden.
As the summer program comes to an end, we have organized a variety of exciting activities for our students. Throughout the summer, we enjoyed playing games, participating in activities, singing songs, watching a reptile, a puppet, and magic show. Each week had a different theme. For instance, during our volcano-themed week, we educated our students about different types of volcanoes and carried out science experiments. During the underwater adventure week, we crafted floating jellyfish using recycled water bottles. Our camping week included a fun cooking activity with celery, cream cheese, and goldfish, and our water slide day was a major hit. The carnival was incredibly fun, with games and a bubble machine area that the children loved playing in.
This summer, our students had a blast participating in a wide range of activities both indoors and outdoors. They were busy with classroom projects and helped take care of our garden. We even had a themed week called 'Down on the Farm' where the children let their creativity run wild by making animal puppets using paper towel rolls. They also went on an exhilarating virtual field trip to a farm. On top of all that excitement, we got to make some really cool projects like space slime and camping tents using popsicle sticks. It was a fantastic summer spent with our students, and we feel incredibly grateful to have shared so many new experiences with them.
