Children's House Room 6

May News

In May, the children are studying dinosaurs and the continent of Africa. During circle time, we will discuss the African people and their culture. Mother’s Day is this month, and the children are excited to show their excellent crafting skills.

I look forward to discussing the children’s progress during parent-teacher conferences. We will be closing early on May 14th and 15th for parent teacher conferences.

April Recap

In April, we focused on Our Planet Earth and Australia. During circle time, the children learned about land formations and volcanoes along being introduced to the Australian puzzle. In honor of Earth Day, we talked about the importance of caring for our planet by knowing how to dispose of our waste properly. We then went through breaking down waste and what can be reused and recycled. They learned the difference between biodegradable trash and trash that is not. We modeled this by doing a group lesson where each child was given an object and had to decide in which bin it belonged and why. They sorted waste made of plastic, compost, aluminum, and paper.

Our Montessori lessons in April focused on taking care of ourselves and our environment. The children continued to work on caring for our classroom and friends. Our book of the month was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! An introduction to both uppercase and lowercase letters. The children had fun doing a few springtime projects like coloring and labeling parts of the flower and using their creativity to decorate an egg. They made rabbits and chickens using construction paper, paint, and glue. The class enjoyed going out to the garden and planting and watering the plants.

March Recap

We're enjoying the longer days and warmer weather this month has brought! We started by celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday, and we're so grateful to all the parents who have sent in Dr. Seuss's books for the class to share. Our book of the month was Dr. Seuss books, and we had a chance to read all our favorite books. Our students have been making great progress with their reading skills, and they've started to blend the sounds of the alphabet to read some books. They're also becoming quite adept at identifying beginning sounds. The children have created lovely art and craft pieces related to Dr. Seuss, Easter, and St. Patrick’s Day in enrichment.

We have been exploring South America and the Amazon rainforest this month. In zoology, the children learn about the different layers of rainforests and the animals that inhabit them in the Amazon. We have also studied Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world. Over the past few weeks, the children have discovered various rainforest animals such as the red-eyed tree frog, coral snake, Amazon piranha, sloth, toucan, and anaconda. Our students even made rain sticks to hear the rainforest. In addition, in zoology, they are learning about the life cycle of chicks.

February Recap

Although February is the shortest month, it has plenty of exciting events. We start the month with the Chinese New Year, which welcomes the year of the Dragon. This month, we have been learning about various countries from the continent of Asia. Our zoology lessons teach the children about Asian animals, such as Asian elephants and silkworms. The children were fascinated by the diverse cultures and objects from different Asian countries. We want to extend a special thank you to all the parents who took the time to share the things showcased in the classroom representing China, India, and Japan and for celebrating the Lunar New Year with us.

The children in our project carried out observational drawings of various parts of the roots and water cycle. They also conducted tentative experiments using coffee filters and watercolor, inspired by our book of the month, "Little Blue and a Little Yellow." The students were also taught about influential African American personnel during this time. Additionally, we introduced the children to Johannes Brahms as part of the music enrichment program. The art program focused on Valentine's and friendship themes.

January Recap

Throughout January, our class explored the wonders of winter snow and ice. The children participated in activities that taught them about Antarctica and its unique wildlife, which complemented our book of the month, The Mittens. We also discussed the importance of participation, grace, and courtesy in the classroom. The children shared examples of how they could put these concepts into practice, like taking turns with jobs, sharing work, giving compliments, and being kind to friends at school. Additionally, we spent time learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and the significance of his contributions.

During our winter animal learning, we also explored hibernation, migration, and adaptation for winter animals. We appreciate your support in providing snacks and clothes for the children, which enhances their learning experience. Being the snack host allowed children to develop social skills like taking turns, using an inside voice, and being responsible and respectful towards others and their surroundings. We also created several art projects based on our book of the month.

December Recap

December is a month filled with joyful anticipation as we look forward to celebrating the holidays. During this busy time, we share our holiday traditions and appreciate our unique differences. This month, our students learned about Europe's rich culture and famous landmarks, expanding their understanding of the world. We are grateful to the parents who took the time to share their traditions with their children, creating a community of inclusivity. Our Christmas performance was a highlight, showcasing the hard work of our dedicated students, who also crafted gifts for their families with love.

In our zoology lessons, we explored the fascinating anatomy of reindeer while we also focused on the beauty of conifer trees and pinecones in botany. Our worksheet activity helped us to appreciate the different parts of a reindeer while we explored the importance of gratitude through the book of the month, "The Giving Tree."

October Recap

In November, our classroom had an exciting month filled with various themes. Our students mainly focused on two topics: harvest and healthy living and the culture of the United States of America. They learned about the country's people, landmarks, traditions, and flags. To support our book of the month, Fill A Bucket, we conducted a cut-and-sort, and we focused on the importance of drinking the importance of drinking water for healthy living. We also had a lot of fun answering cosmic questions about why living things need water.

During our botany lessons, we learned about the different parts of a tree. In addition to that, we focused on cultivating healthy eating habits and understanding food pyramids. During a worksheet activity, we sorted foods from various food groups. We engaged in cosmic kid yoga lessons during circle time to promote physical exercise and relaxation. As Thanksgiving approached, we discussed the significance of gratitude and being thankful. The students enjoyed creating cute turkeys to represent what they were grateful for. These thankful turkeys can also be used as adorable hats.

September Recap

The first month of school has flown by! We've had the opportunity to make new friends and reunite with old ones. Our journey began with getting to know ourselves and our families. Sharing our hobbies and interests made for lively discussions. We also had a blast discovering the different types of apples and creating some beautiful artwork. We've been learning about land, water, and the seven continents in the past few weeks. During circle time, we reviewed classroom rules, and the children have been keen on keeping the classroom tidy. We're currently working on recognizing our names and improving our pre-writing skills. It's been a great start to the academic year!

This month, our students had a fun learning experience in zoology, where they learned about living and nonliving things. We also did some project activities and made a kissing hand craft with a small poem to accompany our book of the month, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. The students also learned about how leaves change color in the fall. For our art enrichment, we made apple pie in a cup, and the children also enjoyed coloring a rock of their own for our rock garden.

Summer 2023

As the summer program draws to an end, we still have plenty of exciting activities planned for our students. We have had a great time playing and learning throughout the summer. We enjoyed various games, activities, songs, a reptile show, a puppet show, and even virtual field trips. Each week, we had a different theme, such as our "Party in the USA" theme, where we taught our students about the various colors of the American flag and their meanings. During the week of underwater adventures, we made floating jellyfish from recycled water bottles. Our camping week featured a fun cooking activity with celery, cream cheese, and goldfish, and our water slide day was a huge hit. The carnival was an absolute blast, with games and a bubble machine area that the children loved playing in.

During the summer, our students participated in various activities both inside and outside. They worked on classroom projects as well as helping tend to our garden. One week, we had a fun 'down on the farm' theme where the children got creative and made chickens using egg cartons. We also took a virtual field trip to a farm, which the children found very exciting. In addition to these activities, we enjoyed making cool projects, such as space slime and astronaut models using popsicle sticks. Overall, it was a wonderful summer spent with our students, and we feel grateful to have shared so many new experiences with them.
