May News

In May, we are discussing Dinosaurs, Africa, and butterflies! The children will be participating in an excavation of “fossils.” Various objects will be hidden in sand, and the children will use tools to excavate carefully. We will be learning all about the Savanna and its animals. The book we are reading is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children will also be making their very own unique butterflies.

I look forward to another month of Spring!

April Recap

In April, we learned about Oceana and Our planet Earth. We focused on the life cycle of plants, taking care of our world, and insects. We spent a lot of time exploring our playground, watching the plants grow, searching for insects, and gently feeling the different textures of the plants, soil, and rocks; the children could see a lot more life in the garden. We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! and made our tree of falling letters. The children learned all about Australia and its beautiful animals.

The children learned about the parts of a flower and the beautiful art of flower arranging. Every Monday, the children got a chance to demonstrate care for the plants. They helped water the flowerpots, and sometimes when the weeds grew too tall, we pulled the weeds around the garden beds. Each child participated in beautifying the rock garden by painting the rocks. We focused on taking care of our environment. We spoke about the importance of recycling and practiced using paper and plastic bottle bins. We had fun bouncing balls, playing group games, and trying our hardest to jump on one leg without toppling over during outside play.

March Recap

In March we brought in the new season by painting cherry blossoms. As a class we learned that the Cherry blossom tree is the tree of March and how it represents spring. And of course another way to recognize spring our class also discussed butterflies as well as their lifecycle. We went through the life cycle of a butterfly during circle time. Through out the month we focused on various other topics such as the continent of South America. We discussed about the people, animals, and culture by going through pictures during circle time. Through out the month we also read many Dr. Seuss books to celebrate Dr. Seuss birthday.

Our class also celebrated St. Patrick’s by having the children paint their own shamrock and of course a St. Patrick’s day party. All of our friends showed spirit by wearing green and each bringing a special treat for our celebration. Thank you families for participating! Another exciting event was the Easter Egg hunt. The children had a blast running around and collecting eggs. We followed this by a fun Easter coloring page.

February Recap

For this month we focused on cultural awareness and Friendship. During this month we had friends bring pictures of their culture and families as they got to share those items during circle time with their friends and teachers. Thank you, families, for sharing a part of your culture with us. We also got to read our special book of the month Little Blue and Little Yellow in which it relates to friendship and made for a fun activity on how blue and yellow make green.

February was also full of fun celebrations such as Valentines. We had delicious treats and all our friends got to share their valentines’ cards with each other. Each child also got to make a heart collage celebrating the holiday. Asia was the continent we were focusing on where our friends learned how Asia looks like as well as the people and different cultures relating to that Continent.

January Recap

January was an exciting month for us. We brought in the new year as we focused on winter animals and hibernation. As well as the new book of the month The Mitten. Our friends really enjoyed listening to the story The Mitten as it’s a Ukrainian fairytale which made for a good transition when talking about animals and snow. We talked about what we wear in the snow as well as to how snow forms. We kept the fun going when we made snow out of baking soda and shaving cream. It was messy but so much fun!

Keeping up with the snow activities, our friends also got to make snowflakes as well as a bear to where we talked about their habitat and hibernation. We also had our letters of the week in which we learned what sound O, P, Q, & R make. The children in the classroom have been working very hard with the Montessori Jobs and have shown great concentration when preparing and doing a job as well.

December Recap

Now that December is over, and the new year is approaching I would like to share the last of our 2023 activities we did as a class. December was such a busy month that we introduced a new book to the class, The Giving Tree.  During our circle time we read the book and discussed Celebrations around the world. Christmas is a very special holiday we love to enjoy so it was fitting to talk about Hanukkah and kwanza as they are two important holidays celebrated every year as well. Our friends painted a menorah that they got to take home and share with their families.

We filled our classroom with beautiful Christmas crafts, the children really enjoyed working on their Christmas stockings. As well as decorating our classroom with a Christmas tree. Each friend brought an ornament for our class tree and had the chance to put it up. Our class also performed for the winter program. They sang two songs Jingle Bells and We Wish you a Merry Christmas. The children practiced hard every day. Thank you, parents, for showing up and supporting our classroom. All of us teachers truly appreciate every one of you.

November Recap

In November our class focused on harvest and healthy bodies, as for the book of the month was To Fill a Bucket which explains how valued and capable everyone is when showing kindness to others. During our circle time we read the book and were talking about the importance of being a bucket filler and how to go about that. Our friends mentioned that helping, sharing, and hugs are things we can do to fill people’s buckets. Of course, we had new letters throughout the month and learned the beginning sound of “I, j, k” and made it a game and checked whose name started with that letter.

We continued November with leaf art and had the children mix the autumn colors together to make leaf handprints, it sure was messy but so much fun. Our friends continued to work throughout the classroom and have showed tremendous improvement on going through the steps and process of doing jobs in all areas such as practical life, sensorial, math, language, geography, and botany. Before we ended the month, we also shared what we were grateful for and of course mommy and daddy were what the children all said.

October News

Come October, we will switch to a new book, We’re Going on A Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. It focuses on an adventure with friends. Through this book, the children will have their chance outside to go on a leaf hunt. They can place their leaves on a shelf where the children can examine them freely. As for the letters, we will review the letters “E, F, G, H & a-h.” Our theme will also switch to the Five Senses and Feelings. This will allow for many fun learning moments during our discussions in circle time as we go over our feelings and examples of how to make ourselves and others feel better when upset. September was a great month for us. I know October will be great as well.

September Recap

In September, we focused on “All About Me” and the normalization of the classroom and routine. As for our book, we Read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. We also reviewed the first four letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, and D. It was exciting to hear all about our friends when they presented their ALL ABOUT ME worksheet. We learned so many neat and fun facts, and we appreciate parents taking their time working on it with their children. As a class, we also discussed families, and everyone had a turn to share something about their family. Following that, we went over with our friends how to care for themselves by practicing how to wash our hands thoroughly and clean their noses and entire faces.

As mentioned earlier, our book of the month was The Kissing Hand. It was well suited for our friends because it focused on reassuring the children that being at school isn’t so scary but fun and exciting. We made a special handprint craft through the book where the children got to feel the cold, wet paint. Our class also centered around the letters A, B, C, and D. We went through words that began with those letters and focused on the beginning letter sound of those words. Our friends also made fun of art by dotting their letter of the week using paint. The children gravitated to our practical life area of the classroom, where they practiced fine motor activities such as pouring, tweezers, lacing, and scooping. We reviewed other Montessori materials during circle time, such as The Number Rods and knobbed cylinders. During these presentations, the children showed a lot of focus and practiced with the material themselves.

Summer 2023

This summer flew by which means our summer program has come to an end. We made the best out of this summer with all the fun themes and activities we had for our friends. We kicked off summer with Party in the USA. Through this we got to discuss what we did to celebrate the Fourth of July and why we celebrate it. This also made for a fun activity where the children got to make their own fireworks using forks to paint their fireworks as well as doing a fun experiment through our milk firework presentation. We continued the fun with our underwater adventure and outer space themes where we discussed our favorite water animals as well as making their own special shooting star.

As we jumped to August the children also got to make their own mosaic volcano as well as their own farm using fun farm animal stickers. Of course we can’t forget about our long awaited water slide days. The children really surprised us with how fearless they were sliding down the slide. We ended our waterslide day with ice pops making it an even more special day. As well as our yearly carnival was a hit. I heard many friends had a blast especially with the foam party closing out the carnival. Thank you to all the families that volunteered as well as all the families that came to support the school. We really do have a great community!
