April Recap
In April, we talked about volcanoes, islands, the continent of Australia. We had a festive week celebrating The Week of the Young Child and enjoying the book fair. We marble painted the earth for Earth Day. The children had fun shaking the box to roll the marble and get the colors all over the earth. We also colored the Australian continent and made shaker instruments out of cardboard tubes. Our book of the month was Chicka, Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, and John Archambault. The children enjoyed going through the alphabet and collectively singing the A-B-C song. Working on the color tablets was a great way to identify the primary colors and match them together.
We enjoyed planting the succulents the children brought to the classroom. Making music with instruments made the children dance and allowed them to hear the musical culture in other countries. We had fun working with recycled boxes outside, building and testing their endurance. We were so excited to wear our pajamas to school and share pictures of our family with our friends.
March Recap
In March, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday and had a “green roar” month, discussing all the rainforest animals and the continent of South America and its culture, and St. Patrick’s Day. The children practiced hand washing, introduced to our new classroom plants, arranged flowers, and sorted in practical life. The children enjoyed a St. Patrick’s green snack, which had them asking for more. In sensorial, we used a variety of sensory Easter eggs. We repeated the sound of the children's first letter and read Dr. Seuss’s books. The children created lots of artworks, enjoying using hand painting, sensory balls and roll out colored tapes. We practiced pouring and using tongs, also we looked for shapes around the classroom. Our Easter egg hunt was an adorable as the children were anxious to pick up eggs. The rain kept us inside some days, which made a dynamic of fun inside activities.
February Recap
February flew by, leaving us with some awesome memories in the classroom, crafting Valentine's artwork, making Valentine’s gifts for families, and then having a fun Valentine's snack party. The open house was a fun night. Among these activities, we enjoyed spooning pom poms from the Chinese bowls, cleaning the bowls, puzzles, and tongs, and pouring. Not to mention sensory activities, the knob-less cylinders, and color tables. The children enjoyed these jobs and other ones too.
As for literature, we read Little Blue Little Yellow and made blue and yellow color-mixing artwork. The children practiced sounding the first letter of their name and the weekly letter, s-t-u-v; singing in Spanish has become a favorite during circle time, the days of the week, and counting the calendar days. The weather in February was not outside friendly for the kiddos on some days, but we engaged in gross motor activity inside the classroom.
January Recap
We practice Winter, Snow, and Ice with practical life skills, sensorial, language, math, and science. We talked about the Globe, land and water, Continents and ice and water for science. We use a variety of snowflake shapes to match, count snowflakes, and do number puzzles in math. Waterbody, hibernating animals, and their habitat were the language. This was a month of a learning experience; using practical life skills went on a cold journey. We read the book The Mitten and talked about our feelings and making people feel love.
January was a cold winter, leaving us with pouring rain and cold nights. Overall, the fun of learning about winter and winter animals made us create fun artwork and learn about hibernation. We practiced the sounds of the letters “o, p, q, and r” and discussed what begins with the month's letter. We read “The Mitten” story during circle time and enjoyed the book character props at Storytime. We danced and sang. For science, we made snow and saw the growth when we added water. We also talked about cold-weather animals and their habitat. We sang new songs, painted, and used handprints to place on mittens. We painted “land and water” art.
December Recap
We practice Celebrating Around the World with practical life skills, sensorial, language, math, and science. We discussed what Hanukah and Kwanzaa were each week and Christmas around the world. We use shapes to construct, sort, and use number cards to help the children connect numbers with counters. Season and weather cards and the difference between seasons were discussed for science. This was a month of learning experience; using practical life skills, we went on an around-the-world journey in our Winter Holiday Recital Celebration. We read the book The Giving Tree and talked about how we can help others.
December was a month of a lot of singing and dancing as we prepared for our Christmas performance. Thank you to all the families that participated with their children in this event; the children enjoyed your company. For Practical life, we practiced twisting nuts and bolts, and for sensory, the children colored a Christmas tree using their handprints. Holiday practices worldwide were discussed, including Hanukah and Kwanza, and celebrating Christmas in the States. We count and sing the good morning song during circle time in Spanish. For literacy, we practice the letters l, m, and n and their sounds. We engage in painting and storytelling with the small Christmas puppets. Let's not forget the fun the children had making the family Christmas gifts and making ornaments for the Christmas tree.
November Recap
Welcome to Room 2 families! I am so happy to be working with your children and look forward to a wonderful year in Preprimary. In November we practiced cutting fruits and setting the table in November as practical life skills. We also sorted out leaves and mixed colors like purple, red, brown, yellow, and green to paint crafted leaves. Picking up leaves outside was a fun activity after it rained; the children felt the different textures the leaves had when it was wet and when they were dry. Brooming the leaves out of the corners was a challenging, fun way to figure things out. We read the book To Fill A Bucket and helped our friends to be kind and compassionate with each other.
We practiced kindness and how to treat our friends and be helpful in school and at home with our families. For language, we practice naming items with the letters j, k, and l and emphasize the sound of each letter by pronouncing “kite, log, igloo, jump as well as the first letter of some of our friends' names. For sensorial, we feel the two sides of the sensorial boards as one was rough and the other smooth. We continued sensorial engagement with the different clothing materials we were wearing and the soft touch of the rug. The children loved getting messy in exploring science and mixing colors for the leaf craft; It was quite a fun moment experiencing the excitement on their faces. For math, we used our five fingers to sing a body part song and count how many friends we had in the classroom. Celebrating Thanksgiving Feast allows the children to practice their practical skills at the table and use their kindness to say, “Thank you.”
